How to read a shake nutrition label in AU/NZ

Compare the same basis, then check what your prepared serving actually contains. Keep powder and prepared-drink values separate.

Compare the prepared serving

Compare like with like: dry powder with dry powder, or prepared drink with prepared drink using the same liquid. Check both the serving column and the per-100-g or per-100-ml column. A larger scoop can make a product look higher in protein simply because the serving is larger. Write down preparation, serving size and the figures relevant to you before deciding.

Start with the exact label

Match the full product name, format and serving size. Similar packaging does not establish an identical formula. Read ingredients, allergens, preparation and storage instructions together; a front-of-pack phrase leaves out information you need to compare products.

Check every ingredient you add

Read the product’s allergen declaration and any precautionary statement. Check your chosen milk, plant drink, topping and shared equipment too. Vegan, dairy-free and lactose-free describe different things; do not treat them as equivalent. With an allergy, do not rely on a flavour name or a photograph. Ask the seller for the current label if it is not clearly available.

Prepare the portion shown on the pack

Check the scoop size, number of scoops and recommended liquid on your own pack. Measure rather than estimating a heaped scoop. Add ingredients in the order recommended, close the shaker fully and mix as directed. Changing water to milk or adding fruit changes the prepared drink, including its energy and allergen content.

Convert a per-100-g value to your portion

Enter a nutrient value per 100 g of dry powder and your powder portion in grams. The result excludes milk, fruit and other additions.

Value per 100 g × portion in g ÷ 100
